Broken Spear

Long Spear walked the narrow trail and took in the light blue sky that outlined the edge of the craggily jagged cliff with evergreen trees clinging to its face rising high above him. He was following a small river looking for a likely place to spear fish or with even better luck catch a nice sized turtle.

This was a day to relax and enjoy.

It was the last of the warm weather before the cold once again took hold.

His return on the previous sun cycle from a very successful hunt left him at ease about the amount of food the clan had available. He and his hunting team would remain in camp for at least one moon cycle before the next hunt. This would give him and his hunters ample time to recover.

His mate had enthusiastically welcomed him back with both a specially prepared meal and the surprise announcement that he would soon have another mouth to feed. This had made him feel grand.

He looked forward to raising the child and passing on the stories that his parents had told him.

He felt on top of the world.

Ahead of him the path dipped where a small side stream came in at the opposite side of the river. The rapids above this point ran down into a still placid pool of water. Long Spear crossed at the top of the rapids by springing from stone to stone. He was pleased to make it across with dry feet. Once across he cautiously approached the pool.

His stealth had paid off.

A large fish was lazily holding its position in the pool. It looked to be asleep but Long Spear figured the large fish was probably waiting for small unsuspecting fish to come down the rapids directly into its mouth.

He slowly raised his spear, aimed his throw to just below the fish and then let the spear fly. He immediately jumped in, pushed the spear all the way through and lifted the arm sized fish out of the water.

So much for his dry feet, he thought as a grin spread across his face.

After gutting the fish, he found and cut off a small stout willow about the thickness of his thumb and ran it length wise through the fish.

He was now ready to carry his prize home and enjoy a mid-sun cycle meal.

He remained on the side of the river opposite from the path he had followed along the base of the cliff. From his new vantage, he was able to see the entrance to the cave that went far back into the cliff. This cave was known as the Children’s Cave.

An extremely narrow passage prevented any of the much larger adults to go back to a very large cavern just beyond that point. In his younger years he had made the journey to that back room. It had been many cycles of seasons since he had last been able to squeeze beyond that narrow entrance.

The calm wide and shallow pool at the base of the cliff just below the cave entrance was a favorite spot for families with small children to spend a sunny summer day. The parents would relax on the sandy flat bank while the children frolicked in the pool.

Just a short distance up the river from the Children’s Cave was a large open cave that served as the meeting place for the clan leadership. This was known as the Leader’s Cave and was generally off limits to everyone but those in the leadership position.

This was where he and his hunt team would come and organize each hunt. The hunt teams were given their instructions and the clan Seer would share any message he might have received from the Ancients.

Long Spear was a sceptic as it regarded the Ancients. He did not believe the Seer spoke to anyone other than those present before him. He could not remember one message or piece of advice a Seer had ever given to him or anyone else that had been of any relevance. He kept his skepticism to himself, but he was sure the “Seer” was that in name only.

He instead always made sure those going on the hunt with him were well prepared. Then as they went to the hunting grounds, he would lead them in discussions on how to handle any emergency that might arise.

Thank you for reading this far.
