Busy Bee

Busy Bee had rightfully earned her second name. She was always hyperactive. From little on she was a bundle of energy. Good things happened when she was properly guided and trained.

Catastrophes also happened.

She single-handedly had caused the collapse of the main meeting lodge when she had tripped over the support lines holding up the walls and had removed them.

The lodge did not fall until the leadership team was inside. Someone bumped one of the support poles and the entire structure collapsed.

Busy Bee admitted to the removal of the support lines. She was only six full seasons old. When she explained why she had done it everyone had a good laugh.

Silver Hawk commented that she had been a Busy Bee. The second name was immediately accepted by everyone.

It had an impact.

Busy Bee did not change her active behavior, but she paid much closer attention to the world around her. She now sought to understand the world before acting.

She was the daughter of Brave Deer one of the lead hunters for the Elk Clan. She became aware that his status gave her many privileges.

Her mother, Little Pebble, became her guide. Busy Bee struggled with the role the women had in the life of the clan. She spent much of her time running and playing with the boys.

She had only one friend. This friend talked her ear off. Her friend eventually earned the name Talking Wren.

Busy Bee immediately reinforced this so appropriate name.

The summer had been a wonderful time. The clan had spent the season in a new valley. It had been much farther to the east than their previous camps in the seasons before

Silent Hawk had been seeking a better hunting ground for the Elk Clan. Busy Bee did not notice the fact that hunting had not produced the amount of food needed to sustain the clan. Her father had voiced his concern, but it meant little to her. She was always well fed and did not understand his concern.

The hunting season ended in a disaster that she understood. The lead hunter, father to one of her male friends, was killed by a rhinoceros. The rhino had also severely injured several other hunters who had come to the aid of their leader. She did not know how to console her friend.

It saddened her.

It was only a few sun cycles later that the Elk Clan left their summer valley and began their journey to the Elk Clan end of hunt season meeting. It was during this journey that she learned of the very dire straits the Elk Clan faced. This was a surprise to her, and she began to wonder what she could do to help the clan.

Busy Bee felt a new sense of responsibility.

She had prepared for the Elk Clan meeting. It was her first time to have a substantial variety of goods to trade. She had been planning to trade for items like new footwear or decorations and clothing for herself.

She instead focused her trading on obtaining as much dried food as she could. She was a sharp trader and always got the amount she sought. Her goods all had a high level of dried food cost attached to them. She was surprised that she had to do little bargaining. She was pleased when all her trade goods were soon gone.

She could now focus on playing with her friends.

One of friends was Quiet Rabbit from the Elk Hide Clan. She learned about her loss of both her father and mother.

She hugged Quiet Rabbit and they both cried together. Afterwards they walked quietly through the forest.

The loss of the main hunter in the Elk Clan and now the same kind of loss in the Elk Hide Clan made her worry about her father. She wondered what she would do if she lost her mother and father.

These were new thoughts and they concerned her greatly.

Not much later she learned that the person who had given her, her second name, Silent Hawk was stepping aside and had accepted Grey Fox Running as the next leader of the Elk Clan.

She and Talking Wren both cornered Quiet Rabbit to find out what she knew about the situation.

Thank you for reading this far.
