The Impact of AI on the Writer

AI is having a dramatic impact on Society. It challenges all aspects of society’s norms and practices. It will have a unique twist for every creative endeavor. Here is my take for the creative writer.

Let me begin with the story of John Henry, the legendary African American rail worker who raced against the steam-powered drill.

He was a symbol of the mastery and the power of the human spirit that faced an overwhelming technological change.

He represents the fact that directly competing against technology on its terms is self-destructive.

AI just like the steam drill represents the future.

Technological shifts as dramatically demonstrated by Edison; the computer and the Internet are unstoppable transitions.

We, everyone in every profession, must rise to the challenge. We must preserve the integrity, must maintain our spirit, and must ensure that our culture blossoms under a new environment.

How does a writer manage doing so?

We the writers must resist using AI directly in our writing. Personally, I do not let AI into my writing realm. I do this because I want my voice to capture the mind of the reader, have them travel in a challenging and unpredictable fun adventure of the mind that follows an unpredictable story arc. I would like to develop and maintain speculative ideas. I want to introduce strange or new cultural norms.

I would love to be a globally recognized writer but will settle for writing that is mine, no matter its quality. I will strive to continue improving my writing skill.

Are there aspects of AI that should be explored, evaluated, and potentially put to use?

Yes!  But I don’t know and am not sure how to use most aspects of this new tool!

Brainstorming – Will AI enhance the generation of new ideas?

This is the only area that I come up with a possible use of this tool by fictional writers. But here the writer must understand that AI tends to synthesize its response on standard patterns and existing tropes. Maybe it would break a writer’s block, but I would not trust it to give me some exciting new insight.

Maybe if it brings me to a cliff and I jump off, the fall will generate a grand new vision before I hit the bottom.

I do know that the writer is the one that must focus on enhancing how they leverage their voice, how they tie into a persons emotions, how they develop a characters personality, whether heroic or villainous, ensure they are complex enough to be real and are able to engage the mind of the reader.

So, like John Henry I will rely on my determination to be original, on increasing skill, by becoming a better writer and my sheer determination to master the art of writing.

LOL and like John Henry I will compete against AI on my terms and in the end I will die, and AI will continue to evolve.
